The Revenge of Five Iron Frenzy | RELEVANT Magazine:

One of my favorite bands of all time, Five Iron Frenzy, is putting out a new album later this year and have a great article over on Relevant (Warning: paywall). Here’s a taste:

“Here’s what it is,” Roper says. “As time passes, I become more embarrassed by the Church, more embarrassed of the actions of Christians. I don’t want that to get in the way of me telling somebody about the love of Jesus Christ.”

He adds, “I get the feeling a lot of our fans are in that place, too. We get a lot of emails from people who are like, ‘Hey, I loved you guys as a kid. You’re my favorite band. I’m not a Christian anymore, but I’m still very excited about the album.’ I want to write an album for those guys.”

The album is being written by a few of those guys, actually, as two members of the band no longer call themselves Christian—an interesting dynamic for a band known for its faith. But for a group already comfortable on the fringes, it doesn’t seem odd. In fact, the band’s spiritually skeptical members have helped shape the album in surprising ways.

But to be a great tech company, it’s no longer enough to just make great products. You’ve also got to let others build stuff on top of your technology—you’ve got to build a platform.

I don’t agree with everything stated in the article, including the idea that Apple is only a product company (or even the idea that Google is solely a services company), but I do agree with the fact that the Tesla is doing things that are innovative in a space in which I am (and you should be) thoroughly invested. I believe electric cars to be the way of the future and that transition will not occur as fluidly if the infrastructure necessary to support drivers is not in place. Tesla is helping forge the way to building that infrastructure, and creating its own advantages because of it.

Therefore, instead of “a little bit of company x”, I would say exactly what I quoted above: Tesla is building a platform for the empowerment of the many, while keeping in mind that its investment in the future will provide a clear advantage to the technologies they personally have created. In that way, Tesla is forging ahead exactly as Apple and Google have, not simply a little bit of one or the other.

There’s no meaning in “it gets technology out of the way,” as Google is wont to say, because Glass is intended to always be in the way, to become a part of us in a much more literal way than smartphones have.

The above is the reason why so many people are put off by Google Glass. It really has nothing to do with the technology itself but more to do with the pedestal on which Glass users will place that technology, as though the technology comes before anything else in priority.

So I will simply echo Kyle’s sentiment: “disturbing”.

This got me wondering about coffee and beer and which one would actually help me be more creative and get work done.

I too have wondered whether to have a beer or a coffee in the morning. The conclusion: drink each when appropriate for creativity (beer) and focus (coffee). Fascinating read with good linked-to studies!

Living in Indianapolis, I have had a number of conversations about the Indy 500 (an event I don’t and never will follow). However, instead of discussing the winner or the strategies and broken records, the conversations regarded crashes; how is that entertaining?

Now I understand a little better…

WWDC is like NASCAR: You come for formulaic display of American ingenuity, but you stay for the horrific crashes and burnouts. And nothing has crashed so horrifically in recent years like tech journalism, specifically Apple-focused journalism.

Alien, Yet Familiar - Man of Steel:

It is strange that Superman, the smiling, soaring Moses-Jesus hybrid who ushered in the era of superhero comics, should be struggling at the multiplexes in an age when every other studio movie seems to feature a man in a cape, a mask with pointy bat-ears or a high-tech suit of iron. The qualities that have made Superman timeless have not necessarily made him relevant to this particular time, with its roster of ironic and loudly violent protagonists, but it was this paradox that made Mr. Snyder eager to take him on in “Man of Steel.”

Perfect! I am so excited for this movie.
